Puss in the Corner Quilt in Summer 2021 Quilter's World Magazine

Have you seen the Summer 2021 issue of Quilter's World Magazine?

I'm excited to share that two of my designs are published are in it - Puss in the Corner and Perfectly Potted Wall Hanging.

If you haven't picked up your copy yet, you can get one here

Today I'm sharing about Puss in the Corner and I'll share about Perfectly Potted in a seperate blog post.

Many times when I design quilts my focus isn't on the design itself but on making sure there is plenty of room for quilting on the quilt!  Puss in the Corner is one of those designs where I wanted to make sure the quilting was the focal point and the block design supported the quilting.

Working with a version of the traditional Puss in the Corner block, the design is set on point and alternated with plain squares for a very vintage look.

Adding to the vintage quilt look are the color choices - white tonal for the background and a mauve pink tonal for the patches.   This classic two-color option is common in vintage and antique quilts.

Also supporting the vintage vibe is all the feather quilting.  Feather wreaths in each of the setting squares and half-wreaths in the setting triangles. A bold feather with straight line quilting in the oversized border and small feather flowers in the open block squares.

Design Tip:  If you like bold quilting in the borders of your quilt, make sure your borders are cut larger enough to accomodate the quilting motifs. Don't be afraid to go with an 8" - 10" border.

And if vintage isn't your thing, then check out this modern take of the same pattern.

In this smaller version, I used the Noeveau Soul collection by Kathy Engle for Island Batik for the fabric and Soft & Bright batting from The Warm Company.  The vibe of the quilt totally changes when the contrast between the background and the patches changes.  With smaller borders the blocks become more of the focal point and the contrasting binding gives the eye a place to land at the edge of the quilt.

So are you ready to make your version of Puss in the Corner?  I hope so and I'd love to see it!  Be sure to tag me #masterpiecequilting when you share on social media.
