Log Cabin Block Challenge - The Reveal!

I know I have been teasing you with photos all month long and the day has finally arrived when I can share my Log Cabin Block Challenge quilt with you!

I finished the quilt earlier in the month and Ruby has been busy guarding it so no one could see what the front looks like!

Everyone needs a good summer quilt - the type of quilt you use all summer long.  A functional quilt that gets and gives a lot of love but still looks great in any location.   And this quilt is it!  I am so excited to finally share it with you.  You don't know how hard it has been to keep it a secret all month.

Free Pattern to make your own version

This is the quilt that goes with you to the beach to lay in the sand, it cushions the bleachers at the ball game, it provides the base for your picnic lunch in the park, it gets wrapped around sunkissed skin when the night air starts to cool. It is the quilt of summer.

This was such a fun quilt to make and yes, I did use a lot of bright scraps to make it.  I'm working on a free pattern but I need a name for the quilt!

Can you help me?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think would be a great name for this quilt.

UPDATE: Summer Cabin is the Pattern Name !  Thanks to all who suggested names.  It's a summer quilt using log cabins - thus Summer Cabin!

Get your copy of the free pattern here

We are already using this quilt a lot and watch for more photos of it in action during the summer.

And be sure to check out all the other designers who are revealing their quilts today.

Old School Block of the Month - Stripey Cartwheels

On the 12th of each month, the tutorial for the Old School Block of the Month is released.  This month is Stripey Cartwheels.  This is such a fun block, I'm sure you will enjoy making it.  I think I'm addicted and want to make even more!

The designer for this month is Natalie Santini of SewHungryHippie.com

Here is the link to Natalie's Block tutorial for this month.

To get the download, you will need to go through the "checkout" process in Natalie's shop, but there is no charge for the pattern.

If you are finding this blog post for the first time and want to join the Old School Block of the Month, we would love to have you!  Here is a link to Kim Lapacek's January block and here is the link to my February block tutorial.  You can find the Facebook group here

I'm continuing my same colorway for all the blocks - pink, blue and white.

This month's pattern makes 2 blocks and there are so many possible color combinations.  The pattern uses just two fabrics but I opted to mix it up a bit by using 6 different fabrics.

Log Cabin Block Challenge - Sneak Peek #2

I know a lot of you had questions after last week's blog post - what was I doing with these log cabins?

Well, the wait is over!  Here is what my completed block looks like.

It's super scrappy and super bright and the dark blue is the perfect accent color to give the eye a landing place.

When I think about Log Cabin blocks, the color placement is usually the focal point with one side being dark and the opposite side being light.  In this case, I re-imagined the color placement and used alternating "rows" around the center of bright and dark.  I totally love the look and think it has so many possibilities.

Besides alternating the color placement, I also changed the width of the strips.  The bright strips are wider while the dark strips are narrower.  This helps with the optical illlusion created by the color placement.

If you are finding this blog post for the first time and haven't heard of the Log Cabin Re-Imagined Challenge, before, this earlier blog post has all the details and will get you up to speed.

So - just between you and me - I do have my quilt completely finished.

And I can not wait to share it with you next week.  Right now it is being guarded so no one can see what it looks like.  Ruby takes her job very seriously :)

I can't wait to see everyone's sneak peeks today. Be sure to follow each of the designers so you don't miss their posts during this fun challenge.

Log Cabin Block Challenge - Sneak Peek #1

Are you ready?  It's time for me to share Sneak Peek #1 of my Log Cabin Blocks! Here are my block centers.

I can hear the questions already .....

Wait, did you think log cabin blocks had to be square?  Not when you are reimagining them!

Aren't all the logs suppose to be the same width in a log cabin block?  Not when you are reimaginging them!  Any size is fair game.

I thought you were going scrappy!  I am, it's just that all that bright scrappiness was a bit too much for me (I was going to need sunglasses just to piece it!) so I added some solid blue to give the eye a landing place.

If you are finding this blog post for the first time and haven't heard of the Log Cabin Re-Imagined Challenge, before, last week's blog post has all the details and will get you up to speed.

I can't wait to see everyone's sneak peeks today. Be sure to follow each of the designers so you don't miss their posts during this fun challenge.

Log Cabin Block Challenge - Fabric Pull

It's a new month and another new block challenge.  This month the designers are re-imagining Log Cabin blocks.  This is going to be so much fun!  I can't wait to see what everyone creates.

If you have been following along, a group of quilt pattern designers are challenging each other to re-imagine and re-interpret a traditional quilt block.  Here are links if you want to take a look at the quilts I made during the Snowball Block Challenge, the Rail Fence Block Challenge and the Pinwheel Block Challenge.

Each Monday in May, the participating designers are sharing about the challenge on their Instagram feeds.  Some of us are adding other social media too.   If you don't already follow me on Instagram, I'm @masterpiecequilting

This week I'm sharing the fabrics that I'm using for the challenge.  I am going bright and scrappy this month.  I have a HUGE plastic tote FULL of bright quilting cottons that I want to use up.  (Note: I've said the same thing on the last 3 bright, scrappy quilts I've made and the tote is still FULL!) All of the pieces are smaller than a fat quarter so they will work perfect in this quilt.

Here is the list of Instagram handles of the participating designers.  Each of us are sharing our fabric pull and / or color scheme on Monday May 3rd.
