5 Patch Chain Block Challenge - Fabric Pull

This month's block challenge fabric pull was a little harder than some other months.  I knew I wanted to make a project with a Christmas theme. Because we all need a head start on Christmas and with the whole Christmas in July thing, it only seemed logical.

Well, what wasn't logically coming together was the colorway.

Should I use traditional Christmas - red, green, white and a bit of Christmas pink as an accent?  Or should I go contemporary with red, gray / charcoal and white.  I never think of these colors as Christmas - but I do like the striking look and when looking at Christmas decorating trends, this combination keeps popping up more and more.

So since I wasn't making the decision very quickly, I asked my newsletter subscribers to help me out.  And they did!  Thank you subscribers!

My inbox filled up quickly and the deciding vote went to .....  cue the drum roll....

Contemporary!

But the voting was so close that I'm actually going to make blocks in both colorways!

This month the block we have been challenged to re-imagine is the 5 Patch Chain Block. Here is a photo if you aren't familiar with it.

If you have been following along, a group of quilt pattern designers are challenging each other to re-imagine and re-interpret a traditional quilt block.  Here are links if you want to take a look at the quilts I made during the Snowball Block Challenge, the Rail Fence Block Challenge, the Pinwheel Block Challenge, the Log Cabin Block Challenge and the Churn Dash Block Challenge.  I have free patterns available for the quilts I made in the Rail Fence block challenge and Log Cabin block challenge.  Links are in the respective blog posts.

Each Monday in July, the participating designers are sharing about the challenge on their Instagram feeds.  Some of us are adding other social media too.   If you don't already follow me on Instagram, I'm @masterpiecequilting

Here is the list of Instagram handles of the participating designers.  Each of us are sharing our fabric pull and / or color scheme on Monday July 5th.
