Masterpiece Quilting's Top 5 Patterns of 2020

As 2020 is winding down, even with all the craziness the year has brought, I am taking some time to reflect on the good things that have happened.  I've sold more patterns than ever - especially pdf digital download patterns.  And the thanks goes to each of you who have purchased.

I've been moved to tears some days when I get the unexpected DM with a photo of the quilt you made using my pattern.  Nothing makes my heart happier!

So in true year-end countdown style, I present my Top 5 patterns for 2020 - in no particular order.

Barn Raised Birds - If you are looking for a stash-busting quilt pattern, look no further!  This delightfully fun design uses just one block made in a variety of scrappy tones.

Sunburst Strips & Squares - This perennial favorite has been one of my top sellers since it was released.  Just grab a roll of precut 2-1/2" strips and some coordinating yardage and you are ready to stitch.

The cover quilt was made using Tonga Batiks from Timeless Treasures but regardless your fabric selection, this quilt looks stunning.

Quick and Easy Patterns for Relaxed Quilting

Are you ready for some sewing time when you can create without worrying about every stitch being exactly perfect?  Many times quilters think that patterns have to be complex to look great and that is so far from the truth. With all the rush of the holidays I know I'm ready for some simple yet stunning quilt making.

I have 3 patterns to recommend that are perfect for relaxed and easy piecing.  All feature straight seams which makes the assembly amazingly simple.

These quilt designs are also great if you are helping someone learn how to quilt or improve their quilting skills and confidence.

Peacock Proud has been a popular pattern this year.  My version is made with Island Batik fabrics.  It uses a roll of precut 2-1/2" strips and some coordinating yardage.

The pattern is available as both print (shipping included) and pdf digital download versions.

Black & White Express is the perfect pattern for showcasing pretty fabrics.  From the photos you can see how the look of the quilt changes as the fabric changes.  I made this scrappy version using Island Batik fabrics.

The original version is more contemporary in black, grays and red.  Pick your favorite colorway and stitch away.

The pattern is available in both print (shipping included) and pdf digital download versions.

Stacked Deck is designed for precut 10" squares so it has both a scrappy yet coordinated look.  My version is made using Island Batik fabrics and captures the winter sky so beautifully.

The pattern is available in both print (shipping included) and pdf digital download version for your convenience.

I'd love to see the version you make.  When sharing on social media, be sure include #masterpiecequilting

I'd love to send you my weekly newsletter full of quilting tips, techniques and latest releases.  Don't worry, it's a quick read and your email address is safe with me.  Here is the link to subscribe.

The Luck of the Irish - New Pattern Release

I'm super excited to share a new pattern release.  This is a quilt that has been made for a few years but I'm just releasing the pattern.  It comes from back in my days of designing and quilting competition quilts.  it's called the Luck of the Irish.  The PDF digital download pattern is available in my Etsy shop.  Print pattern will be available soon.

This queen sized single Irish chain design is the perfect modern traditional quilt.

I'm waiting for the weather to cooperate (clouds, clouds please go away) to get some better photos but here are a few I've taken on the bed.

Since this was a former competition quilt, it is quilted heavily with feather motifs and free motion echo quilting to fill the white background.

The extra wide borders are perfect for showing off a continuous formal feather quilting design.  And of course, Ruby thought the quilt would look best with her laying on it!

Christmas Quilt Show - Part 3

It's been a quick minute!  Back in November I shared Part 1 of my Christmas Quilt Show.  In case you missed it, here's a direct link to the eye candy and quilty goodness!  And Part 2 came out the next week - here's the direct link to it.  And then apparently I took a nap and I'm just now sharing Part 3!  This post has 4 more Christmas quilts that I've designed.  There is no particular order - so just sit back and enjoy!

Peppermint Candies

This is a super fun quilt that was on the cover of McCall's Quick Quilts a year ago.  I have now have the pattern available in my Etsy shop in both print and pdf digital download versions.

I had some fun taking photos of this quilt with the big lighted Christmas tree in a neighboring town.  Huge thanks to hubby for being my quilt holder.

Lonesome Heart

This is a brand new pattern - yes, you are seeing it first!  It features Island Batik's new Heart to Heart fabric collection which is arriving in quilt shops right now.  This contemporary color version of the traditional lone star design is so stunning!

Both print and pdf digital download versions of the pattern are available.  This pattern is rated as an Intermediate skill level but it's so worth the extra effort to make it.  Since this pattern is a bit more challenging, I have been thinking about doing a video class showing how to make it.  Leave me a comment if you would be interested in it.  Thanks!

Poinsettia Bed Runner & Pillow

This is the perfect duo for when overnight guests are coming and you haven't thought about decorating the guest bedroom!  Just add a runner and a pillow and all is good.

Both print and pdf digital download versions of the pattern are available now.

Holly Table Topper

Last but not least is my Holly Table Topper.  This fun topper is great for tables of all sizes and the open center area allows you to add a floral arrangement or a serving tray without worry about it covering part of the design.

Right now I have just the pdf digital download pattern available.  Don't worry, print version will be coming soon :)

And folks, that's it for the Christmas Quilt Show - blog post style!  Thank you for joining me and thank you for all the kind comments.

Peppermint Candies - Pattern Release

There are certain scents that I associate with different times of the year and peppermint always reminds me of Christmas.  Who doesn't love a good candy cane or peppermint flavored fudge this time of year?

I'm pleased to share my Peppermint Candies quilt pattern with you.  Peppermint Candies features two-toned Dresden blocks set on an aqua background for a fresh holiday look.  Forget the complex piecing as raw-edge fusible applique makes the block assembly quick and easy. This quilt can easily be left out to enjoy even after the tree has come down.

If the quilt looks familiar, it was the cover quilt on December / January 2020 issue of McCall's Quick Quilts magazine.  I'm now releasing both a PDF digital download and Print versions of the pattern.

To make the quilt, I used a variety of solids, tonals and metallics from Michael Miller (yes, Fairy Frost - my favorite!) as well as Soft & Bright batting and Lite Steam-A-Stem II from The Warm Company.

Patterns are available in my Masterpiece Quilting Etsy shop.  Here is a direct link for the Print Patterns with complimentary shipping as well as the PDF Digital Download version.

If it seems like something is missing from this post - such as the cool styled shots I normally show ... those are on the calendar for TONIGHT.  Our town has just put up its lighted Christmas decorations and I'm hoping for a great photoshoot.  Check back tomorrow when I load the photos :)

Christmas Quilt Show - Part 2

Last week I shared Part 1 of my Christmas Quilt Show.  In case you missed it, here's a direct link to the eye candy and quilty goodness!  Each post will contain 4-5 Christmas quilts that I've designed.  There is no particular order - so just sit back and enjoy!

First up is my Wreath Runner & Wall Hanging which are a super fun duo that can add some Christmas cheer really quickly to your décor.

This pattern works well as a stash buster for a scrappy look or you can use fat quarters for a more planned look. The runner can be easily adjusted for any size table or buffet and you also have option of turning it into a long skinny wall hanging just by changing the placement of the bows.

Wreath Runner & Wall Hanging is available as a pdf digital download pattern or as a complete kit with print pattern.  Apparently, I never loaded the print pattern for sale (oops!).  Let's add it to the coming soon list!

Next up is Mistletoe Magic.  This throw with matching pillow is a great pair for the living area of your house.  It's quick and easy to make.  I'm really loving my fabric selection because it allows me the option of leaving the quilt out longer.  With the traditional red / green quilts, I feel like they need to be put away when the tree comes down and Mistletoe Magic doesn't have that vibe.  In fact, I think it could be left out year round.  I won't tell if you won't tell!

Mistletoe Magic is available as both print pattern and in PDF digital download format.

By far one of the most stunning quilts I have designed is the Jingle Bells Quilt.  This bed-sized beauty is simply gorgeous.

The swag border is worth the extra work to get that WOW response from your family and guests.

Jingle Bells Quilt is available in both print pattern and PDF digital download versions.

The final quilt for this post is my Peppermint Twist quilt.  It's a fun quilt that will bring anyone back to the memories of childhood and peppermint candies.

Peppermint Twist will work either as a bed quilt or a throw quilt.  Wouldn't it be fun to snuggle under on the couch watching movies?

Peppermint Twist is available as a PDF digital download pattern.  Print pattern will be coming soon as will some fun photos!

That's all for Part 2 .. stay tuned Part 3 will be up soon.

Christmas Quilt Show - Part 1

This is a hard post for me ... I'm one of those people who like their celebrations in order - Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas.  But I'm also kinda getting tired of fall - I'm over the Pumpkin Spice Latte look in the house. I'm over leaves needing bagged in the yard. I'm over the squirrels coming up on the front porch and munching on my decorative corn!

But I'm also a realist, I know if red and green quilts and decor start going up at the end of November, then you have to start making them now!

So, let's get this Christmas Quilt Show party started.

First up, one of my favorites!  Christmas Friends.  Strong reds and greens paired with white make this quilt appear as fresh as newly fallen snow.

I like to describe it as a little bit modern, a little bit contemporary and oh so wonderful to snuggle under watching movies while the snow falls outside.

Christmas Friends is available as a PDF digital download pattern.  Watch for the print patterns to be coming soon!    UPDATE:  Print Pattern is now available!

Up next is one of my favorite wall hangings - Tree of Presents.  It celebrates what really matters - the presents!  With a bit more whimsical take, there is nothing traditional about this wall hanging.

The metallic fabric presents pop against the blue background.

Tree of Presents is available as a PDF digital download patternLook for the Print pattern coming soon!   UPDATED:  Print pattern is now available!

One of my most popular wall hanging designs is Oh Christmas Tree.  It celebrates a more vintage decor with an off-white background and muted green tree fabrics.

It is perfectly sized for behind the buffet or an entry hallway in your home.

Oh Christmas Tree is available in three options for your convenience. A PDF digital download pattern, a Print Pattern or as a complete Kit with all the fabric to make the quilt top + binding + print pattern.

To finish up Part 1 of the Christmas Quilt Show (don't worry, Part 2 will be coming!), is my Block & Tackle quilt pattern.  I know the name Block & Tackle sounds more like fishing than quilting, but this quilt design uses panels as the center of the blocks!

I made this quilt earlier this year using the Winterberry Collection from Benartex fabrics.  The colors are perfect for a primitive / vintage decor with the muted greens, deep brick red and black accent fabrics.  If you missed it, you can catch the blog post here that was part of Benartex's Christmas in July Blog Hop.

Block & Tackle is available as both a PDF digital download pattern as well as a Print Pattern

Additionally, I designed a couple pillows to go with the quilt and to use the remaining portions of the Winterberry panel.  The pillow pattern is available for free download

That's all for Part 1.  Leave me a comment if you enjoy the show :)  I've already started on Part 2!

#SewPink Initiative Blog Hop

I am super excited to be part of the #SewPink Initiative Blog Hop put together by By Annie and Patterns By Annie.  This is my second year to participate in this very important cause - to raise awareness for breast cancer.

As a quilter one of my most frequent requests is to help put together a "Sentiment" or "Signature" quilt for someone who has been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing chemo treatments.  Since I've never actually written out the instructions or put together a tutorial on how to do this, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

"Sentiment" quilts are made using fabric pieces where friends, family, co-workers, classmates and others have written inspiring messages to support the person with cancer or any type of illness.   There are a variety of different ways and styles to make a quilt like this, so don't feel like there is any "right" way and other ways are "wrong".

Here is a list of the supplies that you will need to make a 39" x 58-1/2" quilt with 54 blocks on the front side:

  • 8" squares of light-colored solid or tonal fabric - enough for everyone to sign plus some extras
  • 6-1/2" square cutting grid or cardboard template
  • Thread
  • Rotary Cutter, Mat and Cutting Grid
  • Water-Soluble Marking Pen
  • Permanent Fabric Markers - preferably fine or ultra fine point
  • 7" squares of coordinating fabrics - person's favorite color, pink for breast cancer, prints that match the person - enough to complete the front of the quilt. 54 minus # of signature blocks.
  • 1-3/4 yards of 42" wide fabric for backing
  • polyester batting to size
  • 1/2 yard of binding fabric

Since making a sentiment quilt is more of a process than step-by-step instructions, I put together a video that explains what I'm doing but more importantly, the why I'm doing it.  Many times when sentiment quilts are put together it is a team effort and not all of the team are sewists or quilters.  One person may do the cutting, another helping mark, someone else mails and collects all the fabric pieces, another person presses, etc.  My intent for this video is to help everyone understand the process so they can make a quilt that best meets the needs of the person they are making it for.

I have also prepared a pattern to accompany the video.  The Sentiment Quilt pattern is available as a digital download.  Please click this link to start the process of having it emailed to you.

To find the complete schedule for the blog hop and more information about breast cancer, this link connects you to the ByAnnie.com page.

And finally, we can't have a blog hop without a prize!  It's super simple to enter, just leave a comment on this blog post and I'll select one lucky winner to receive a $30 coupon to ByAnnie.com  Isn't that easy!  Please make sure your settings will allow me to email you or otherwise I won't be able to contact you if you win.

The #SewPink Initiative was created by ByAnnie.com LLC to raise awareness for breast cancer throughout the year. Our efforts culminate in an annual blog hop during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote self-care, awareness, early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer.

Oh Christmas Tree Quilted Wall Hanging - Print Patterns, PDF Digital Download & Kits available!

Depending on where you live, it's starting to look like Christmas.  Thankfully I'm in Indiana and we are getting a really cold rain but I'm seeing photos from Iowa and they have snow!  Yikes!  I'm not ready for snow, I'm still wearing capris :)

Speaking of Christmas and Christmas shopping.  I know a lot of you have already started shopping or are putting together your shopping lists.  I do not want to instill any panic - I'm not that type of gal - but I have set the Christmas Shipping Deadline for my Etsy shop as Monday December 7, 2020.

What does this mean?  All orders placed by 12 midnight EST Monday December 7th will be guaranteed for delivery by Christmas Day.   Yes, that is in less than 2 months... so shop early, shop often!

And what wouldn't make a more perfect Christmas present than a quilted Christmas Tree wall hanging?

In my Etsy shop, I have both print patterns as well as PDF digital download patterns AND kits!  Yes, kits!  Complete kits to make the quilt top + binding with print pattern.  This is a popular pattern and the kits are already selling quickly - so don't miss out.

For your convenience, I've added the links below. Thank you for shopping my Etsy shop.

Halloween Gift Giving in Style! Mug Rug Free Tutorial + Pattern

If you are like me, life is getting a bit weary right now.  While so many things have changed this year beyond our control, I'm viewing this as an opportunity to make our own changes and start some new traditions!  Who says Halloween has to be for kids and candy?  Why not take some time and gift a few simple gifts to your adult friends for Halloween?  Whether it be co-workers, old college friends or folks in your neighborhood, a simple gesture can mean so much.

I'm using my Super Simple 9-Patch Mug Rug pattern that is available for FREE at this link to make some adorable mug rugs.

Since this is a stash based project, I grabbed black and orange tonals that play well together for the 9-patch and binding and a coordinating tonal for the backing.

The first step is to make the 9-Patch block.

Next I layered the backing, batting and the top.
Please note:  if you are planning on using this mug rug with really hot coffee mugs or soup bowls, make sure you use a heat-reflective batting to prevent any damage to your furniture.

I did some really simple 1/4" quilting to hold everything together.

The next step is to add the binding and viola!  It's finished! And now, I'm ready to celebrate Halloween in style!   For gifting, you can pair it with a matching mug, some hot chocolate mix or the beverage of your choice ;)
