Spring Cleaning & Getting Ready for Summer Sewing

Yep - Spring fever has hit me!

I spent some time over the weekend cleaning in my studio, windows open, music blarring and that sure felt good!

I have a bad habit of stacking the leftover fabric when I finish a project and when the stack falls over, I plop it into a tote and then keep adding more fabric until the tote is full.  What I end up with a multi-season, multi-color mess of stash fabric that is hard to sort through without dumping the whole tote.  Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this.

So before the stack fell over (it was close ... really, really close!), I decided to sort the fabric by size and by color.  Anything larger than a 1/2 yard goes in a seperate tote and the smaller pieces are sorted by color and fabric type.

This summer I'm making a scrappy quilt using precut 2-1/2" strips.  So I took it a step further and cut the leftover fabric that fits that quilts colorway into 2-1/2" strips.  It didn't take me long to cut the fabric and the task of putting away the fabric that didn't fit the colorway was a lot easier too.

Now I have a head start on making this quilt.  As it gets warmer, I know I will be spending more time outside working in the yard and my sewing time will be less.  It's nice to have a project precut so I can easily spend my time sewing without having to stop, dig through my stash, press and cut fabric.

If you are looking for quilts that would be great for summer sewing take a look at these three options.  All are quick and easy to make and can be as planned or scrappy as you want them to be!

Peacock Proud is designed for precut 2-1/2" strips.  Grab a bundle or cut from your stash for a quick and easy project.

Pinwheel Block Challenge - Fabric Pull

I'm excited to be part of the Pinwheel Block Challenge during April.  If you have been following along, a group of quilt pattern designers are challenging each other to re-imagine and re-interpret a traditional quilt block.  Talk about fun!  It has been amazing to see each designer take the traditional block and add their own spin on it.

Here are links if you want to take a look at the quilts I made during the Snowball Block Challenge and the Rail Fence Block Challenge.

Each Monday in April, the participating designers will be sharing about the challenge on their Instagram feeds.  Some of us are adding other social media too.   If you don't already follow me on Instagram, I'm @masterpiecequilting

This week I'm sharing the fabrics that I'm using for the challenge.  My quilting style is modern traditional so I'm making my version of the traditional pinwheel block using bright, modern solids.  I've grabbed a fat quarter bundle of Michael Miller Cotton Couture Sew Colorful Colorwheel and am pairing it with Powderblue and Candlelight solid yardage.  And yes, these fabrics may look familiar, it is the same group I used for my Snowball Block Challenge.

If you want to use the same fabrics that I am using, they are available in my Etsy shop.

Perfectly Potted Wall Hanging in Summer 2021 Quilter's World Magazine

I'm excited to share my second design that I have in the Summer 2021 issue of Quilter's World magazine. In addition to my Puss in the Corner bed quilt (read all about it here), my Perfectly Potted Wall Hanging is published in this issue.

If you aren't a subscriber, be sure to pick up your copy of the magazine on a news stand or you can purchase using this direct link.

Perfectly Potted is a super quick and easy paper-pieced project that is perfect for using up scrap fabrics. I made my version using Island Batik fabrics that I had in my stash and Warm 80/20 batting from The Warm Company.

Sometimes you need a plant you can't kill!  This plant will bloom perfectly without water or sun or needing to be repotted.  It is perfect for offices, dorms, apartments or any other small space where you want to add a splash of color and a real plant just won't work.

If you are new to paper-piecing and want to try it for the first time, this project is perfect since it isn't a huge time committment.  You can easily make it in a day.  It took me longer to go thru my stash and select the fabrics than it took to make the wall hanging.

So are you ready to make your version of Perfectly Planted?  I hope so and I'd love to see it!  Be sure to tag me #masterpiecequilting when you share on social media.

Pick up your copy of the Summer 2021 issue of Quilter's World magazine here and get started today.  Be sure to check out all 18 amazing designs in the magazine.  There are several I can't wait to make.

Puss in the Corner Quilt in Summer 2021 Quilter's World Magazine

Have you seen the Summer 2021 issue of Quilter's World Magazine?

I'm excited to share that two of my designs are published are in it - Puss in the Corner and Perfectly Potted Wall Hanging.

If you haven't picked up your copy yet, you can get one here.

Today I'm sharing about Puss in the Corner and I'll share about Perfectly Potted in a seperate blog post.

Many times when I design quilts my focus isn't on the design itself but on making sure there is plenty of room for quilting on the quilt!  Puss in the Corner is one of those designs where I wanted to make sure the quilting was the focal point and the block design supported the quilting.

Working with a version of the traditional Puss in the Corner block, the design is set on point and alternated with plain squares for a very vintage look.

Adding to the vintage quilt look are the color choices - white tonal for the background and a mauve pink tonal for the patches.   This classic two-color option is common in vintage and antique quilts.

Also supporting the vintage vibe is all the feather quilting.  Feather wreaths in each of the setting squares and half-wreaths in the setting triangles. A bold feather with straight line quilting in the oversized border and small feather flowers in the open block squares.

Design Tip:  If you like bold quilting in the borders of your quilt, make sure your borders are cut larger enough to accomodate the quilting motifs. Don't be afraid to go with an 8" - 10" border.

And if vintage isn't your thing, then check out this modern take of the same pattern.

In this smaller version, I used the Noeveau Soul collection by Kathy Engle for Island Batik for the fabric and Soft & Bright batting from The Warm Company.  The vibe of the quilt totally changes when the contrast between the background and the patches changes.  With smaller borders the blocks become more of the focal point and the contrasting binding gives the eye a place to land at the edge of the quilt.

So are you ready to make your version of Puss in the Corner?  I hope so and I'd love to see it!  Be sure to tag me #masterpiecequilting when you share on social media.

Let's Gather Table Runner - Incredibly Beautiful Season by Season

Do you have patterns that are your "go-to" patterns when making a quilt?  You know, the patterns that assemble easily and always produce stunning results regardless of what fabrics you use?

Let's Gather is my go-to pattern for table runners and I want to share with you how incredibly beautiful the Let's Gather runners are for each season.

Recently I shared my Let's Gather Table Runner in a spring colorway and it is getting so many positive comments and sales of the pattern and kits.  Thank you to each of you who are liking, loving, sharing, commenting and purchasing.   In case you missed it, here is a link to the blog post.

I made the spring version of Let's Gather using Solid-ish Watercolor Texture fabrics by Kimberly Einmo for Timeless Treasures fabrics.  I love the deeply saturated colors that are oh, so, springy.

I do have kits of the Spring colorway available (see link below) and each kit includes all the fabric needed to make the runner top + binding, print pattern and shipping is included.

And if you just want to purchase the pattern, here are links to the print and pdf digital download versions.

I'm not sure which I like better between the Fall and Christmas versions of Let's Gather.  Both of them are super adorable and a great way to set your table for the season.

Here is the traditional red, green and gold version of Let's Gather set formally for a Christmas photoshoot.

Here it is again on our dining room table in a less formal setting.

The Fall version of Let's Gather gets the most use in our house.  It normally comes out in August and is in use through Thanksgiving.   You can tell by looking at it that it has been washed a few time since it is starting to pucker up a bit which gives it a nice vintage look.

I do have a kits available for the Fall version of Let's Gather so you can get a jump start on your fall decor.  A table runner makes a great housewarming gift too, so get two kits and make one for yourself and one to gift.

If you have been looking closely, the color placement between the Spring version and the "original" version that I used to make the Fall / Christmas runners is different.  I have different patterns available for the "original" version.

What's next for Let's Gather?

I'm thinking a patriotic red, white and blue version.  I just got a few bolts of Michael Miller fabrics that would be perfect and kits would be available.

Or maybe a blue and white version for a "winter" look?

Or maybe soft muted decorator colors?

I'd love to know what version you would like to see.  Leave me a comment and let me know.

Rail Fence Block Challenge - The Final Reveal

Today is reveal day for the Rail Fence Block Challenge!

If you are catching this post for the first time and aren't exactly sure what I'm talking about, there are two other posts that preceed it.   First is my Fabric Pull post where I share the fabrics that I'm using to make my Rail Fence Reimagined quilt.  Second is the Sneak Peek #1 post where I show making the traditional rail fence block.  Next is the Sneak Peek #2 post where I shared the split block and now the final reveal.

I'm so excited to share my Split Fences quilt with you and let you know that I have a brand new quilt pattern available for it too!

From the moment I started on this quilt, I knew exactly where I wanted to photograph the finished quilt!  At the local nature preserve, volunteers recently build a true split fence near the parking area and I knew it would be the perfect location for a photo shoot.  (Stay tuned for more photos of other quilts from this location - it is gorgeous!)

If you get frustrated sorting thru blog posts trying to figure out how to make a quilt, I've got another big surprise for you!  A free pattern for my Split Fences quilt.   I've taken all the information I've share in the blog posts and written a complete pattern.   Here is the link to download the pattern.
